The third largest city in Spain is certainly not unknown to you. Surely you have already heard about the birthplace of the Spanish paella, but do you also know what a Falla is? Larger than life homemade styrofoam puppets steal the show in Valencia during the annual spring festival called "Las Fallas". These colorful caricatures get burned at the end of the festivities and only one is saved from death by the flames and exhibited in the Fallas Museum, the first stop on your city trip. The museum will perhaps make you think of Madame Tussauds, but it’s far more amusing, and you will be surprised to see exactly how much humor is integrated in the Fallas.
Since the Middle Ages Valencia is also known to excel in ceramics. The national ceramics museum should therefore not be missing on your visiting list. Both the collection and the building are impressive: a beautiful and vast variety of pottery and brightly colored tiles or so called ’azulejos’, located in the sumptuous baroque palace of the Marquis of Dos Aguas.
We end our morning at the very historic heart of this beautiful city, dipping into the vibrant atmosphere while contemplating the beautiful cathedral, the elegant palaces, the massive city gates, the old silk exchange, the central food market, … plunge into history and enjoy the lively squares and cozy narrow streets made for strolling. In the afternoon you are given free time to explore Valencia at your leisure. With both the international chains being well represented, as well as the more exclusive designer boutiques having conquered their place, even the most demanding shoppers will not be disappointed.
Absolute flagship of the city and a feast for the eyes is City of Arts and Sciences, the largest cultural complex of Europe. It is a futuristic masterpiece of 350.000 m², which overwhelms visitors with its sleek and modern design. It is the perfect place to end our day with a photo stop.
